CloudShare Concepts
Use this Glossary of Terms to quickly learn about each of the components that make CloudShare run. You'll see these components in nearly every action you perform.
Environments and Policies
- Environment
An entity that combines computing resources, networking, operating systems, software, and memory state in one easy-to-use and manage unit. An environment consists of one or more virtual machines (VMs) connected by one or more virtual networks.
- Policy
Defines how long an environment will run, when it will be deleted, and what happens to it when it has been idle for a certain length of time. You can define as many policies as you need, and apply a policy to an environment, a POC invitation or to a training class.
Blueprints and Snapshots
- Blueprint
A container for an environment’s snapshots. New environments can be created from the default snapshot in the blueprint.
- CloudShare Environment Template
A pre-configured sample blueprint supplied by CloudShare to showcase some customer environments and best practices.
- Default Snapshot
The snapshot in a blueprint that is used whenever a new environment is created from the blueprint, such as when you create a class or an end user invitation.
- Latest Snapshot
The most recently taken snapshot of the environment.
- Regions
Geographical locations hosting data centers that store blueprints, snapshots, and environments.
- Snapshot
An image of an environment at the time of capture – including RAM/CPU/disk allocations, network configurations, installed software, documents, and settings. Snapshots serve as backup copies of your environment and as potential templates for demo environments.
Access and Links
- Permalink
A snapshot-specific permanent link that creates and opens a copy of an environment based on the snapshot and governed by a specified policy. A permalink can be sent to an unlimited number of project members and lets them all spin up their own copy of the environment.
- Vanity URLs
Shorter, personalized, and easy-to-remember URLs when using CloudShare’s Web Access feature to access your web applications.
- Web Access
On-demand internet access to a web application running on your machines via a permanent web address, allowing you to access your environment via HTTP/HTTPS at any time.If you have a web driven application with a web access feature, you can provide an external party with access to the application by sharing the Web Access URL. If the environment is in suspended state at the time it is accessed via Web Access, it is automatically resumed.
End Users, Invitations and Classes
- Class
-
A time period during which:
Specified end users (students) can spin up a copy of a specified environment.
An instructor can guide a learning experience by monitoring students’ environments and their activities in the environments, and can intervene when needed.
- End User
Someone you invite to access a copy of your environment – for example, a prospective customer or a student in a class. An end users can access an environment using the Environment Viewer or another designated method. An end user cannot access the CloudShare platform.
- Environment Viewer
A web-based user interface that provides end users with access to a running environment.
- Invitation
A link to a personal copy of an environment.
Management
- Account
A set of purchased CloudShare resources within which projects can be created.
- Project
-
A defined set of:
Resources (RAM and disk space) from which environments can be created, and·
Users who can access those resources and perform actions permitted by their project role.
Every blueprint, environment, and environment policy belongs to a project.
- Project Manager
A user role. Project managers are administrators for an entire project, able to view and manage permissions for all users in the project, as well as add new project users. Project managers are also able to create environments and manage and publish blueprints and snapshots.
- Project Member
-
A CloudShare user who belongs to a project. The user may have any of three user roles:·
Project Manager
Team Manager
Team Member
- Team
A subgroup of users within a project.
- Team Manager
A user role. A team manager is the head of a team and is able to add and modify team members.
- Team Member
A user role. A team member is a user who belongs to a team.
Other Key Terms and Concepts
- Cloud Folders
A cloud storage location that supports FTP upload and is accessible to CloudShare environments. Cloud Folders can be mounted on VMs and is used for uploading software, documentation, training material, code, content, configurations–any local files that you need to transfer to VMs in your CloudShare environment.
- VM Import
CloudShare provides methods for importing your own Virtual Machine (VM) definitions. Upon import a prepared template of your VM is ready to be used in any CloudShare environment.
