Calls to list.asmx failing when using external url

I am getting below error sometimes when I am accessing the site externally. This is on the calls to /_layouts/list.asmx. In fiddler I see the below error
HTTP://1.1. 502 Bad gateway
Server: Apache/2.0.64 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.64 OpenSSL/0.9.8k DAV/2

and

The remote server you tried to access failed to respond.
The environment owner should check the configuration and verify that the web server is properly configured.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
