SharePoint 2013 Search Service will not start

In case anyone else runs into a similar issue, you may find this helpful.  

When I tried to start the SharePoint 2013 search service I get the error shown in this screenshot. 

 

It would not start in Central Admin either and the Search Service was already set to run as a Local Service as suggested here, so that wasn't it.  

However, I managed to solved this by creating a Search Application on the Manage Service Applications page in Central Admin.

  I had a similar issue and change the Log On credentials to be the same as the other and it started fine.
